BACKGROUNDER

One of the first papermakers of English PM was the firm started by a Huguenot, Henri de Portal who escaped to England from France. He settled in 1712 at Bere Mill in South Hampton, He did so well that he leased a mill at Laverstoke, both on the river Test near Overton in Hampshire. Where, with the help of his fellow emigrants, he began to make paper from the wood of apple trees.

They did so well that in 1724 (or 1727, accounts differ) Henri de Portal obtained the privilege of making notes of the Bank of England. His son, Joseph Portal bought Laverstoke manor. Henri was later naturalized as Henry Portall of South Stoneham, gentleman.
They also invented the metallic thread incorporated into the paper which started out within the paper later coming to the surface as a dotted line called "windowed thread"
