BACKGROUNDER

Palestine banknotes issued by the Palestine Currency Board under the British Mandate of Palestine  are limited to just 6 denomination type issues. The British Mandate of Palestine was in existence from 1920 until 1948 when the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution to partition Palestine with a two state solution on November 27, 1947. Great Britain then announced its termination of the Mandate effective May 15, 1948  and the State of Israel was proclaimed on May 14, 1948. The Jewish Agency for Israel accepted the partition plan but the Arab Higher Committee did not and initiated the Arab-Israeli War in 1948.

When the West Bank was controlled by Jordan in 1964 the Palestine Liberation Organization was established.

Egypt, Jordan and Syria initiated the Six-Day War in 1967 and when it ended Israel began the occupation of the Gaza Strip and the West Bank and some other territories.

It was probably during the 1960's that the Emergency Canteen chits were issued by the Palestine National Liberation Front. The notes were used at Unit 450 and two denominations have been seen, 5 Mils and 10 Mils with dimensions of approximately 35mm x 55mm (1.3" - 2.2").

Following the Six-Day War in 1967 the PLO moved to Jordan. After the Black September conflict in 1971 between the PLO and Jordan, the PLO moved to Lebanon. In 1974 the PLO was granted "Observer Status" by the UN General Assembly as a "Non-State Entity."

Currently the State of Palestine (Arabic: دولة فلسطين‎‎ Dawlat Filasṭīn), also known simply as Palestine, is a de jure sovereign state in the Middle East that is recognized by 136 UN members and since 2012 has a status of a non-member observer state in the United Nations – which amounts to a de facto, or implicit, recognition of statehood.  (1)

I fully expect  to receive comments that displaying these notes promotes the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) and that the PLO has been declared a terrorist organization by the United States and Israel at the Madrid Conference in 1991. However it should also be noted that in 1993 the PLO recognized Israel's right to exist in peace, they then accepted the United nations
Security Council resolutions 242 and 338 and also rejected violence and terrorism. In response, Israel recognized the PLO as the representative of the Palestinian people.

There have been numerous times since 1993 that violations of this agreement have happened. Many parties have tried to find a lasting solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, without success to date. A solution is sorely needed.

Numismondo has stated in the past that its objective is to list all issued banknotes, without regard to a particular political point of view but I'd be happy to hear any comments visitors may have about this situation or the displaying of these notes.
