BACKGROUNDER
Banco de la República Mexicana was established by President Carranza in 1918 in order to provide currency stability. This act eliminated the need for the wide array of commercial banks issuing currency in the country. While this bank did not have a long history, it can be considered the forerunner to the current Central Bank, Banco de Mexico which came into being in 1925.
