BACKGROUNDER

Kiribati was a formerly part of the British dependency of the Gilbert & Ellice Islands.

On 1 October 1975 Ellice Island separated and became independent as Tuvalu.

On 12 July 1979 the Gilbert Islands declared their independence as the Republic of Kiribati.

On 20 September 1979 the USA recognized Canton (Kanton), Enderbury, Hull (Orona), Birnie, Gardner (Nikumaroro), Phoenix (Rawaki), Sydney (Manra), McKean, Christmas (Kiritimati), Caroline, Starbuck, Malden, Flint and Vostok islands as part of Kiribati which became effective on 23 Sep 1983.

Abemana Atoll issues appears to be a local currency, however they may be a fantasy issue. Information about these notes is needed.
