BACKGROUNDER/ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

Kiau Chau (Kiautschou) located in Eastern China on the Shangtung Peninsula became a German trading enclave in 1897.

The Japanese captured Kiau Chau, also called Tsingtao for the port city, on 7.11.1914 and maintained its control until 1922 when it was restored to China.
