Kazakhstan,
flush with oil wealth, created a new,
ultramodern capital at Astana (Астана)
w hich
was
formerly known as Akmola (Kazakh:
Ақмола / Aqmola) until 1998.The m  ayor
of Astana is Imangali Nurgaliuly Tasmagambetov (Kazakh:
Иманғали Нұрғалиұлы Тасмағамбетов)
who was previously the Prime Minister of the country, attesting to the
importance of the new capital. With a population of less than 1 million, the
town was a major railroad junction during the Soviet era but remains
controversial for many factors, including it's remote location and financial
structure. |
