BACKGROUNDER

Persia was officially neutral in WWI, however, in practice they used their military and other assets in support of the Germans and Ottomans to try to defeat the British and Russia occupation.

The German military along with Turkish troops occupied a small region of Persia. The German units operating in the area issued German currency overprinted with local values in Persian script.

Some of these notes were found stored at wars end to have been singed in a fire. Most are quite scarce with the high denominations being rare.
