BACKGROUNDER

The Revolutionary Committee of the North proclaimed itself as a provisional government on 27 November 1888 with Louis Mondestin Florvil Hyppolite as President. Hyppolite was subsequently elected to govern the whole of Haïti  and was sworn into office on 17 October 1889 at Gonaïves. He established a new constitution in 1889 which remained in force until 1918, the longest in Haïti's troubled history. While still in office, on 24 March 1896 Hyppolite  fell off his horse and died of apoplexy . He was succeeded by Tiresias Augustin Simon Sam who was sworn in on  31 March 1896.

Note: Those who have counterfeited or falsified the treasury or bank notes authorized by LBNS on or who have made use of these counterfeit notes, will be punished with death!

In 1999 a commemorative 1,000 Gourdes banknote was prepared to honor President Hyppolite and the 250th anniversary of the capital city of Port-au-Haiti 1,000 Gourdes 1999Prince. Because of instability in the government it was released in 2004. A press announcement was made in April 2005 stating that this banknote was planned to be released and that the old stock of 1999 dated notes as well as a new dated 2004 note would be released "soon". A 1,000 G. note with both 1999 and 2004 dates was also released in April 2006 and another 1999/2007 note was released in late 2007.
