BACKGROUNDER

Dahomey was a French overseas territory of France. On 1 Aug 1960 it declared independence from France as the Republic of Dahomey. On 30 Nov 1975 it became the People's Republic of Benin and on 1 Mar 1990 it became the Republic of Benin.

Benin presently uses West African Currency Board issues of the Banque Centrales des Etats de l'Afrique with Code Letter "B".
