BACKGROUNDER
1   The Merchant Bank was founded in Canada in 1864 and later chartered as The Merchant Bank of Halifax in 1869.

It began operating an agent branch in Hamilton, Bermuda starting in March 1882. N.A. Butterfield & Son acted as the banks agent in Bermuda from 1882 until 1889 when the operation was sold to The Bank of Bermuda, Ltd.

During the period of operation it is known that Canada P.S1184  5 Dollars was overprinted for use in Bermuda and valued at 1 Guinea. No other foreign banknote issues have been reported.

The Merchant Bank of Halifax became the Royal Bank of Canada in 1901.

Bermuda modern issues (1970 on) are displayed with the addition of the words SPECIMEN in black as required by the central bank.

This designation does not indicate that these notes are SPECIMEN's as normally known by collectors but is required to conform to the permission letter we received from the central bank, The Bermuda Monetary Authority.

Banknotes with red SPECIMEN overprints are normal SPECIMEN notes as known by collectors.
