COMMEMORATIVE PAPER MONEY, PART 3, 1971-80

by Robert K. Myles LANSA#1109

Posted June, 1999

This decade saw a flood of twenty-seven new commemorative notes.  Only thirteen of these were from Latin America, from seven of the countries.  The other eight countries issuing commemorative notes are listed in the Pick catalog, Vol. 3, 4th Edition, and the end of this article.

BRAZIL

Brazil issued a note in celebration of the 150th anniversary of Brazilian independence from Portugal.  The front of the note portrays five people, representing the different ethnic groups that shared in the development of modern Brazil and in the quest for independence.  The back of the note illustrates five different maps of Brazil.  The maps portray the different boundaries and cities during the different periods of development of the country.
